Meet my spark-bird: the lilac-breasted roller!
Don't know what a spark-bird is? It's the one bird that sparked your interest in birding. And I feel if you look at a lilac-breasted roller and fail to be amazed at its beauty, then all hope is lost for you :)
I have seen the rollers all over eastern and southern Africa - their habitats are savannahs, bushveld and grasslands with scattered trees they use for perching. You will usually not find them in urban areas or dense woods.
Unlike many other birds, the colourful plumage is not just a male privilege, the females wear the same bright colours.
The diet of the lilac-breasted rollers consists mainly of insects, small reptiles and sometimes even little birds.
I will also admit I can never not stop to look at them or try to take pictures, they are just too special to be ignored.
The roller got its name from the spectacular aerial performances the males display during mating season- rolling mid air and 'painting a rainbow in the sky' (according to some local legends. Once you have seen the amazing colourful display, you will know why!).
By the way the Afrikaans name for the lilac-breasted roller is 'Troupand', which literally translates to wedding pledge.

Darf ich vorstellen, die Gabelracke, mein 'spark bird' (also der Vogel, der meine Begeisterung für's Birding geweckt hat)!
Diese Vogelart habe ich überall auf Safari im östlichen und südlichen Afrika gesehen - ihre Habitate sind Savannen, Busch und Weiden mit Bäumen, auf denen sie hocken und Ausschau halten. In bebauten Gegenden oder dichten Wäldern hingegen findet man sie eher nicht.
Anders als bei vielen Vogelarten, sind bei den Racken die bunten Farben nicht nur dem Männchen vorbehalten, auch die Weibchen zeigen sich farbenprächtig.
Sie ernähren sich von Insekten, kleinen Reptilien und manchmal sogar kleineren Vögeln.
Obwohl die Gableracken eine eher 'gewöhnliche' Sichtung auf Safari ist, kann ich nicht umhin, jedes Mal anzuhalten und sie zu beobachten und fotografieren - sie sind einfach soo schön <3
Man sagt übrigens, dass der 'lilac-breasted ROLLER' seinen Namen daher hat, dass sich die Männchen zur Paarungszeit mit spektakulärem Rollen und Drehen im Flug in Szene setzen (und dabei, der Legende nach, den ersten Regenbogen in den Himmel malten. Wenn ihr sie erstmal in Aktion gesehen habt, wisst ihr, warum!).
Übrigens heißt die Gableracke auf afrikaans 'Troupand' = Ehegelübde. Wie romantisch :)
